The Sussex Spaniel is a low, heavy, rectangular spaniel with a rich golden-liver coat, a frowning expression, and long dropped ears. The movement has a characteristic roll.

The Sussex Spaniel is an English flushing spaniel from Sussex, used in dense cover. It is one of the rarer spaniel breeds. The AKC places it in the Sporting Group; the UKC classes it as a Gun Dog.

Temperament

Sussex Spaniels are typically calm, stubborn in a quiet way, and devoted to their people. They still need walks; a heavy dog that sits all day gets sore and fat. They can be reserved with strangers.

Be patient. They learn, but they do not hurry.

Care and grooming

Brush the coat weekly and keep the heavy ears clean. Keep this long-backed spaniel lean.

Health

Sussex Spaniels may develop heart disease (pulmonary stenosis), hip dysplasia, and ear infections. Keep them lean.
