The Pyrenean Mastiff is a giant Spanish livestock guardian with a massive head, small dropped ears, and a thick white coat marked with darker patches. The tail is long and well plumed.

The Pyrenean Mastiff, or Mastin del Pirineo, is a flock guardian from the Spanish Pyrenees. It lived with sheep against wolves and thieves. The UKC classes it as a Guardian Dog.

Weight: Male: 120 pounds and up; Female: 90 pounds and up
Color: White with well-defined gray, fawn, or gold patches; a white blaze is typical
Coat: Dense, moderately long double coat

Temperament

This is a calm, independent guardian. It is typically devoted to its own household and reserved with strangers. It needs space and a role, not a busy suburban sidewalk.

Training

Socialize early and keep the rules quiet and firm.

Care and grooming

Brush the heavy coat weekly, more often when the undercoat blows. Grow this giant slowly.

Seasonal and heavy.

Health

As with other giant guardians, hip dysplasia and bloat can occur. Do not exercise hard right after meals.
