The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is a small, rough-coated French scenthound with a bearded face, dropped ears, and a longer-than-tall outline. It is shorter than the Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen and should not be a low-slung cartoon of that breed.

A short-legged rough hound who can share a house if walked; wiry coat care, a merry bay, and more nose than a tiny flat usually wants.

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, or PBGV, is a French hare hound from the Vendee. It is a hunting basset, not a toy. The AKC places it in the Hound Group; the UKC classes it as a Scenthound.

Color: White with black, sable, or orange markings; tricolor and grizzle also occur
Coat: Harsh and not too long, with a beard and eyebrows

Temperament

PBGVs are typically outgoing, noisy on a track, and determined once a scent is found. They need more walking than a short yard break. They will follow a trail out of an unfenced yard.

Training

Train the recall early and use a long line. They learn, but scent comes first.

Care and grooming

Brush the harsh coat weekly and clean the ears. Keep this long-backed dog lean.

Shedding

Moderate.

Health

PBGVs may develop ear infections, hip dysplasia, and eye problems. Limit jumping off furniture.
