The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is a medium, compact retriever with a red or orange coat, a feathered tail, and a white blaze, chest, or feet on many dogs. The outline is that of a small working retriever, built to play along the shoreline.

A compact retrieving dog for an active house; a coat that sheds, a generally friendly voice, and daily swim or fetch time rather than idle hours.

The Toller is a Canadian gundog from Nova Scotia. It tolls (lures) ducks by playing on the shore, then retrieves the birds. The AKC places it in the Sporting Group; the UKC classes it as a Gun Dog.

Temperament

Tollers are typically busy, intelligent, and vocal. They need retrieving games or field work, not just a short walk. They can be reserved with strangers.

Training

They learn quickly and get bored with drill. Keep sessions short and start water work early.

Care and grooming

Brush weekly and dry the ears after swimming. They shed more when the undercoat blows.

Shedding

Moderate; heavier seasonally.

Health

Tollers may develop hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and autoimmune disease in some lines. Ask breeders about hip, eye, and DNA testing.
