The Karelian Bear Dog is a medium, square, black-and-white hunting spitz with erect ears and a curled tail. The outline is that of a dense-coated Finnish hunter, built to find and hold large game.

A black-and-white hunting spitz for experienced handlers and country space; a dense coat, a hunt bark, and too much fire for a quiet apartment.

The Karelian Bear Dog is a Finnish hunting spitz used to find and bay moose and bear. It works with a hunter, not as a pack of running hounds. The AKC lists the breed in FSS; the UKC classes it as a Northern Breed.

Temperament

These dogs are typically courageous on game, loyal to their hunter, and sharp with other dogs. They have a ringing bark and a high prey drive. They are not a casual family pet for a first-time owner.

Training

Be consistent and give the dog a hunting job. Without work, a Karelian Bear Dog will invent trouble.

Care and grooming

Brush weekly, more often when the undercoat blows. A secure fence is essential.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Hip dysplasia can occur; keep working dogs fit rather than overfed.
