The Jindo is a medium, well-muscled spitz with erect triangular ears, a curled tail, and a dense double coat. The outline is that of a Korean hunting dog, slightly longer than tall, with a keen expression.

A reserved Korean hunting spitz for a house and experienced handling; a dense coat, a watchful bark, and a poor match for a chaotic first-time apartment.

The Jindo is a hunting and companion dog from Jindo Island in Korea. It is the National Dog of Korea and is known for a strong homing instinct. The AKC lists the breed in FSS; the UKC classes it as a Northern Breed.

Temperament

Jindos are typically loyal to one household, reserved with strangers, and independent. They have a strong prey drive and do not always get along with other dogs. They are not a soft first-time companion breed.

Training

Be consistent and start socialization early. They think for themselves and will leave if the rules make no sense.

Care and grooming

Brush weekly, and daily when the undercoat blows. A secure fence is more important than fancy trimming.

Shedding

Seasonal and heavy.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Hypothyroidism and hip dysplasia can occur; keep the dog lean.
