The German Hunting Terrier is a compact, raw-boned working terrier, usually black and tan, with a harsh coat that may be smooth or broken.  The ears are V-shaped and folded, and the expression is keen.

A tough, wiry earth dog for a working household; modest coat care, a sharp voice, and drive that does not suit a quiet apartment.

The German Hunting Terrier, or Jagdterrier, was created in Germany after World War I as a game, all-purpose hunting terrier.  It is used to ground, to flush, and to hunt under the gun.  The UKC classes it as a Terrier.

Temperament

This is a sharp, courageous working terrier, not a lap toy.  It is typically loyal to its hunter and too much dog for a household that only wants a quiet companion.  Prey drive is very high.

Training

Be consistent and give the dog a hunting job.  Without work, a Jagdterrier will invent trouble.

Care and grooming

Brush the harsh coat weekly and strip it a few times a year if it is the broken variety.

Shedding

Low to moderate.

Health

The breed is generally hardy.  As with other small working terriers, watch for injuries from underground work and keep the dog lean.
