The Finnish Hound is a medium-to-large, tricolor scenthound with a long head, dropped ears, and a short, dense coat. The body is rectangular, built for all-day work in Finnish forests.

A Finnish pack hound with a short-to-medium coat and a carrying hunt voice; built for long days in the forest, not thin-walled city life.

The Finnish Hound, or Suomenajokoira, is Finland’s native pack and brace hound, used on hare and fox. It was developed in the 19th century from European hounds to work in snow and forest. The UKC classes it as a Scenthound.

Temperament

These hounds are typically good-natured at home and determined on a scent. They have a carrying voice and will follow a trail out of an unfenced yard. They need more running than a short leash walk.

Training

Train the recall early and use a long line. Scent will beat a weak recall every time.

Care and grooming

Wipe the short coat and clean the ears after work in cover.

Moderate.

Health

Finnish Hounds may develop cerebellar ataxia in some lines and ear infections from field work. Ask breeders about health testing.
