The Dogo Argentino is a large, white, athletic mastiff with a broad head, powerful jaws, and a short coat. The outline is that of a pack hunter, not a heavy courtyard statue.

A large, short-coated pack hunter and guardian for experienced handling and a fence; quiet with his people if worked, not a first city dog.

The Dogo Argentino was created in Argentina by Antonio Nores Martinez as a big-game pack dog for peccary and puma. It is a working hunter and guardian, not a companion mastiff only. The AKC lists the breed in FSS in this database; the UKC classes it as a Guardian Dog.

Temperament

This is a courageous, people-oriented working dog that can be dog-aggressive if it is not socialized. It needs an experienced owner and a job. It is not a breed for a casual first-time household.

Training

Socialize early with dogs and people, and keep the rules clear. Strength without training is a problem.

Care and grooming

Wipe the short coat weekly. White skin can sunburn; provide shade.

Health

Dogo Argentinos have a high rate of congenital deafness, especially in all-white dogs. Hip dysplasia can also occur; BAER hearing tests are recommended.
