The Curly-Coated Retriever is a tall, racy retrieving dog covered in small, tight curls from the poll to the tail. The head is wedge-shaped, and the coat on the face is short and smooth.

A large water retriever with a crisp curl that needs little fussing if kept right; a working voice and a need for swim or field time, not idle city hours.

The Curly-Coated Retriever is one of the older English retrieving breeds, used on waterfowl and upland birds. The curls shed water and protect the skin in brush. The AKC places it in the Sporting Group; the UKC classes it as a Gun Dog.

Temperament

Curlies are typically confident, a little more independent than a Labrador, and loyal to their household. They can be reserved with strangers. They need field or water work, not just a short leash walk.

Training

Be consistent and start retrieving early. They think for themselves and do not enjoy endless drill.

Care and grooming

Do not brush the curls out; dampen and separate them with the fingers. An occasional bath is enough if the dog is working.

Shedding

Low; loose hair is held in the curls.

Health

Curly-Coated Retrievers may develop hip dysplasia, eye disease, and glyogen storage disease in some lines. Ask breeders about health testing.
