The Cesky Terrier is a short-legged, clipped working terrier with a long head, dropped ears, and a silky, slightly wavy coat. The outline is longer than tall, built for going to ground.

A small, clipped terrier who can live in an apartment if walked; modest coat work and a quieter voice than many terriers, with a hunter still underneath.

The Cesky Terrier was created in Czechoslovakia by crossing Scottish and Sealyham Terriers to produce a working earth dog that was easier to groom. The AKC lists the breed in Miscellaneous in this database; the UKC classes it as a Terrier.

Temperament

Cesky Terriers are typically calmer than many small terriers, but they are still game. They are usually affectionate with their household and reserved with strangers. They may hunt vermin if given the chance.

They learn quickly and remember unfair handling. Keep sessions short and socialize them with other dogs.

Care and grooming

The coat is clipped on a schedule, not stripped like a Scottie. Brush weekly so the furnishings do not mat.

Cesky Terriers may develop Scottie cramp and eye problems in some lines. Keep them lean; extra weight is hard on a long-backed terrier.
