The American Leopard Hound is a medium to large, muscular cur with a broad head and a short coat that is often merle or leopard-spotted. Ears are dropped or folded, and the tail may be natural or a short natural bob.

A treeing hound for country space: short coat, a carrying voice on game, and energy that is wasted in a quiet condo.

The American Leopard Hound, also called the Leopard Cur, is a United States scenthound and treeing cur used on raccoon, squirrel, and larger game. It is related to other Southern curs and to spotted working dogs of the same region. The UKC recognizes it as a Scenthound.

Temperament

This is a determined, people-oriented hunting dog. It is typically friendly at home and intense on a track. It needs more exercise than a typical house pet of the same size.

Training

Train with patience and a job. Scent drive is strong; a leash and a fenced area are safer than off-lead work near roads until the dog is reliable.

Care and grooming

The short coat needs a weekly rubdown. Check ears and pads after hunts in brush or water.

Shedding

Low to moderate.

Health

The breed is generally hardy. Deafness can appear in double-merle breedings; responsible breeders do not mate two merle dogs together.
